Seven stayers have been confirmed in the 2016 Herbert Power Stakes field; a race that offers punters exceptional value from a betting standpoint and several key opportunities to place a winning wager.
Macedon Lodge runner Assign has returned to racing in slick form this time and remains and outright $3 favourite in 2016 Herbert Power Stakes betting markets with Ladbrokes.com.au, ahead of Howard Be Thy Name ($4) and Big Memory ($6).
Will Assign justify favouritism and win the 2016 Herbert Power Stakes, or will one of his rivals post an upset?
Howard Be Thy Name ($4)
Howard Be Thy Name is sure to have taken plenty of benefit from his first two runs this time, will relish a return to a mile and a half and should prove tough to beat in Herbert Power Stakes with only 53.5kgs in tow. Running second in the Listed Tasmanian Derby (2200m) on February 5th, the Redoute’s Choice entire returned to the mainland for consecutive wins in the Listed Port Adelaide Guineas (1800m), Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (2020m) and Group 1 SA Derby (2500m). Arriving in Brisbane for third in the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m), Howard Be Thy Name was returned to the paddock after running fourth in the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m).
Pemberley undoubtedly faces the biggest task of his current preparation when he lines up for the Herbert Power Stakes, but he will be seeking his third-consecutive race win on Saturday and is more than worth consideration for a bet at current odds. Pemberley was returned to the paddock after failing to fire and eleventh in the Listed Mornington Cup (2400m) on April 2nd, but the son of Darci Brahma has comfortably taken out each of the Sheep Hills Cup (1815m) and Murtoa Cup (2050m) since resuming.
Prince Of Penzance ($11)
Melbourne Cup hero Prince Of Penzance has been charged with carrying a race-high 60kgs in the Herbert Power Stakes, but his class is sure to count for a lot, as well as his proven ability in this race. Prince Of Penzance returned for a hit-and-run second in the Group 3 RA Lee Stakes (1600m) in autumn, but was clearly in need of more distance when he beat only one runner home in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) first-up this time on August 27th. Progressing to sixth in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m), the Pentire gelding failed to run on in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) a fortnight ago but should find a great position in transit on Saturday from the ideal barrier 4.
